Ostap, your guard retention series is brilliant. Your comment that instructors tend to focus on offense is absolutely correct. I think this is the best and most systemic explanation of the fundamentals of modern open guard defense — and I’ve seen a lot of them (Mginaction, Mendes brothers online, countless DVD’s). Every competing blue belt should be taught a solid, basic defense against the most common sport BJJ passes, but for someone reason many instructors don’t teach that way. And one final comment. Obviously most competitors learn some strategy to defend each major family of passes by the time they are a purple belt or brown belt. But as you said, it's mostly by experience, intuition, picking up bits and pieces here and there, etc — at most schools, it just isn't systemically taught the way you do it here.For me I personally wish I had seen your videos earlier, because it would have saved me so much time.
