Side Control Submission Shallow Over Hook

1

In this video I show a sneaky submission from taking an overhook. When done correctly and used with the proper setup you can have a LOT of success with this. The first few months that I practiced this move I really did not give it the proper respect that it deserves. This was a favorite move of Dennis Ashe from Connectionrio and although I practiced it, I did never really used it.Fast forward 3 years and it's one of my favorite tools to use against people that value the underhook (like I've ingrained into my students). The trick is to take an shallow overhook and create space to step over the head. I really like this because if it fails it still leaves you on top, possibly on the back or in the crucifix position. If you fail at this move more often than not it's because your spacing is off or your elbow is not pinching into your ribs. Remember that pinching with your elbow is a very key part as the 3-5 inches of space your opponent's will get get will be the exact amount of space you need to finish the shoulder lock. Once you get that arm secured by pinching it's time to block the hip. When you block the hip remember to cut across the body very tightly and then place a FIST on the floor. DO NOT use your hand. Your opponent is going to try to blast into the back of your arm and move you. The job of that hand by the hip is not to STOP them from moving, but to slow them down. Do not expect that a fist on the floor blocking the hip will stop the power of your opponent's core pushing on your hand. If you use your hand, instead of your fist, and your opponent bridges into your arm, your hand will lock in place and you could possibly break your elbow. So, using the fist is of utmost importance. Now that you've slowed your opponent down you'll want to turn and rotate your body onto your opponents (reference the video). Make sure that your weight is resting on your opponent and not on your fist. This is a contradiction to the previous paragraph but after you've made the rotation there will be some weight transfer going on there. Then, with your weight resting on your opponent, rotate you chest (slowly) towards the ceiling. This can be a difficult submission to get the hang of without repping it. You may have problems securing and gaining proficiency at it without an instructor or direct access to the video…It's just a weird submission. Try it out and if you have problems just film it and post it as a reply and I will walk you through it.
