In this clip, BJJ Black Belt Perry Hauck teaches two basic submissions from the Modified Kesa-gatame (aka “Kuzure Kesa-gatame” / “Modified Scarf-hold”) position. The video features a straight armbar with the legs and an Americana-type shoulder-lock with the legs.

Key points for basic Modified Kesa-gatame position:

-Be as “high-up” as possible on your opponent's torso, with your belly in his (R) armpit. (This is KEY for these particular arm attacks. For certain other attacks from Modified Kesa, you may actually want to move lower on his torso, but for these, being “high -up” adds greatly to their success).

-Make sure the (R) leg you have under your opponent's (R) shoulder, is as straight as possible, to kill his attempt to bridge.

-Use your (L) hand to raise your opponent's (R) arm high up in your
(L) armpit and clamp his (R) wrist between your (L) upper-arm and lat.

-Keeping that armpit clamp, add a slight “twisting motion” (to your left) with your shoulders. This will allow the angle of your ribs on the (R) side of your torso to be the point making contact with your opponent's right side. Listen to your opponent's breathing, when you hit the right spot, you will usually hear an exhale as your opponent tightens his abdomen. Now relax your torso and let let your body-weight do the work.

-One way to add to your weight is to angle your lower body away so that your (R) hip has several inches of separation from the (R) side of your opponent's torso. You do NOT want your (R) hip tight against your opponent's (R) side, rather you want your (R) thigh and your own right side (the “angle of your ribs”) to be the points making contact. Having your “hip-out” slightly like this makes you simultaneously “heavier” on his chest and more difficult to roll.

-Keep your buttocks a millimeter or so off the mat.You want your opponent to feel your weight on the (R) side of his upper torso/chest. If you sit next to him, you lose a lot of that pressure.

REMEMBER…

In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, there are always multiple “correct” ways to execute technique. It is not always necessary –or even possible– to replicate the exact same set of steps, in order to apply a particular move in sparring. As such, techniques are probably better viewed more as a general framework, rather than a precise blueprint. Ultimately, techniques themselves are just one “take” on a particular moment in time. They're not laws about what must be done, but rather simply IDEAS about what can be done.
