@Eugene McDonald – the downward way is called the cock and release method.
the way demonstrated in this video is the “easier” way to kick in my
opinion. Both works good but i think cock and release method takes less
energy but is harder to learn for beginners…

I would never kick downwards.  If aiming for a leg kick you should bend your lead leg at the knee in order to hit the correct part of the leg.  Coming downwards is really stupid and makes the kick easier to be caught.
