In order to maintain side mount, we must understand how and why to keep our opponent flat: When he is flat his hips and shoulders (mini-his) point at the ceiling not towards us or to his side where the bulk of our body is positioned. Notice that every type of escape he makes is initiated by him turning his hips and/or shoulders towards us.
