While a sleeve grip would help you with the sweep itself, a hand on the
lapel gives you a more secure position once you have completed the sweep
and are trying to pass the guard. Also, from experience, it is very hard to
maintain the sleeve grip without either also controlling the lapel or the
opposite sleeve, especially against a larger opponent. Hope that helps.
