Erik Paulson Breaks The Lockdown

57

The "Lockdown", known more generically as the "Scorpion Lock" has become a very popular and effective base of operations from the Half Guard. On three separate occasions I asked Sensei Paulson how he would counter this style of half guard and this was perhaps his most thorough, set of options. In the future, Dr. Sick will revisit Breaking the Lockdown and try to consolidate a couple of the other options shown during other sessions with Sensei Paulson. Now check it out and enjoy this killer set of Leg Locks, brought to you exclusively by Taking It To The MMAT!

Erik Paulson is a good grappler but he’s also a complete asshole. I can’t
believe anyone would even speak to this shitface, let alone roll with him
after seeing how he smiles while damaging his friends knees like that for
no reason other than sheer animosity.

+daniel Talamantes  Ah, that makes perfect sense. It's important to always stay mindful of how you step and to stay in the habit of keeping your feet aligned with your knees. The leg should turn at the hip, not the knee. Still, if he stepped like that, that could hint that he has a habit of stepping like that. If he has a habit of stepping like that, say, for example, every time he gets out of the car, then it can definitely weaken his ligaments and make them more likely to tear in a situation like you described. With… Read more »

I definitely think the guy could of had hurt he's knee before because his foot was in the same position as an inverted heel hook. He tried to defend the throw by stepping out with the leg I wasn't reaping. I then rotated him over it. When I looked down during the throw I saw the position of his foot and how it twisted, it was the exact way the inverted heel hook twists

+daniel Talamantes  You may not fully understand how ligaments work. That throw might not have been what really caused the injury. It may have been due in large part to someone else cranking on his knee a few days or weeks before hand, etc. If you feel pain when twisting a joint that isn't meant to twist, like the knee, then you are damaging the ligaments. Ligaments heal very slowly and the damage can last a long time and accumulate. That's why fighters and other athletes blow out their knees in "freak" accidents. Watch cote vs silva. Cote blew out… Read more »

+Shniggit the only time i've hurt someone's knee to the point they needed surgery was from a throw (uchi mata) never from holding a lock for a little extra.

+daniel Talamantes  I'm sure it'll still be "all just fun" when you need knee surgery.

I believe you are mistaking him vocalizing his pain to be him laughing. It does sound a little like laughter, but I believe he is actually beginning to cry out in pain.I have many hours experience rolling. I don't know exactly how many, but maybe 50-200 hrs or more total, including training, drilling and live rolling. When someone taps, you're meant to let go, not to go further. To go further is very likely to do damage, especially when twisting someone's knees. I know people who have permanently damaged knees because their training partner went too far.I've also started training to… Read more »

No, I’m in the ARMY. We’re a little more concerned with our jobs than
posting video’s, pretending it adds inches to our dicks (Well, most of us).
And three little vids makes you no expert or MMA badass. All you did was
reference what you “see in ufc”. Doesn’t sound terribly experienced to me,
little boy. And I never claimed to “know my shit”. You made that up
yourself. I say Erik Paulson knows his shit. And I say you’re some white
belt GJJ kid whose lessons his mother pays for.
