Preguica is the nickname that was given to him by Vinicius “Draculino” Magalhaes and it’s stuck with him for years. Now if you’re not of Brazilian decent or don’t speak Portuguese you may think to yourself what an honor it is to receive a cool nickname from one of jiu-jitsu’s most knowledgeable and esteemed instructors. Wrong! Being called lazy or a sloth really isn’t something you want to go bragging about to your family and friends. Well, that name actually helped light a fire inside of Felipe Pena, that continues to burn and doesn’t look to be extinguished anytime too soon. To say he’s on a hot streak (pun intended) would be putting it mildly. In just his first year at black belt he’s been at the top of the podium not once, but twice (back-to-back) at the prestigious Copa Podio Grand Prix at middleweight and has staked his claim as an IBJJF World Champion. That in itself is a big deal, but when you consider that he’s beaten some of the best athletes to ever step on the mats. Need to be more impressed? Well at such a young age, in only his early 20’s, you realize that he’s just getting started!
